Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in response to the Obama administration’s announcement that unemployed borrowers with FHA mortgages or who are participating in the Making Home Affordable Program will be able to receive 12 months of mortgage forbearance:
“We commend the administration for siding with American families. Now it is up to other lenders – including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – to follow suit. This announcement recognizes that the housing crisis is essentially a jobs crisis. It acknowledges that foreclosures hurt more than just the families who get forced out onto the streets; it hurts lenders, communities, and puts our economy in jeopardy.
Each day can feel like a whole year for the millions of Americans who struggle to make ends meet in this challenging economy. The foreclosure crisis has touched every community in our nation. The unemployment rate remains unacceptably high, especially for communities of color. Today’s announcement will be met with a sigh of relief for the homeowners who would otherwise be forced to choose between providing a safe home for their families or food on the table.”
